I hate flowers - I paint them because they’re cheaper than models and they don’t move.

If the workshops below do not meet your needs or interest, consider scheduling private instruction and/or tutoring, online instruction, or photo tours.
Sonoma County & San Francisco Bay Area Private Photography Instruction and/or Tutoring
I designed my private photography instruction and/or tutoring for the photographer who wants accelerated learning or is time constrained and wants teaching that is more intensive or who wants help in a specific area of photography. I offer you individual instruction and/or tutoring in any area of nature, wild life, black and white, architecture, macro, portraiture, and fine arts. Additionally I provide beginning, intermediate, and advanced instruction and/or tutoring in most aspects of photography.
I always give you honest, compassionate, and encouraging photographic advice. I do not withhold any ‘professional secrets.’ We are not competitors – we are partners.
Individual instruction and/or tutoring are available on a two-hour, half-day, full-day or multiple-day basis. My fee for single private instruction and or tutoring (up to three people shared) is $125.00 per hour, $325 per half day or $650 per day. A multiple-day fee is available; a 50% deposit is required at the time of booking.
Online Instruction
If you would like to learn photography in the comfort of your own home, consider enrolling in my online instruction.
Sonoma County & San Francisco Bay Area Photo Tours
My fee for photo tours (up to three people shared) is $450 per half-day including instruction and critiques, or just the photo tour (no instruction) for $200 per half-day. Photo tours help you locate the best locations to maximize your camera gear. I will help you to embrace your visual interpretation while looking for the less obvious.
Workshop Philosophy
There are many fine photography workshops in California where you can learn the entire technical “how to," approach for your camera and the variety of subjects that you like to photograph. In these traditional workshops, the leader usually does not take any personal photography.
They give their full attention to the workshop participants. If you are interested in this valuable teaching approach then I highly recommend that you research them on the internet and select one that fits your needs.
I have a different perspective on teaching a photography workshop. Drawing on my writing, art, and photography background my teaching emphasis is more on spontaneous natural creativity rather than systematic technology.
I believe that it is the craft of ‘process,’ that creates the art of photography. Regardless of the technical acumen, your camera cannot tell you what to include in your composition. No matter how advanced your camera is, it cannot create a connection with your subject nor show you when to press the shutter button.
I have a very relaxed, yet aware personal teaching style. This allows me to be present with each participant since I do not have an agenda or itinerary to follow. I do want to inspire your passion, vision, and creativity and motivate you to become the photographer that you desire to be. I want to encourage your photographic inquires.
I want to share knowledge in an easy, flowing, uncomplicated manner. Show you how to see through the eyes of an artist. In the photography excursions that I facilitate in the San Francisco Bay Area, I know that it is all about the process of relationships that makes a difference in quality photography. This includes the relationship of connections, process, communication, space, light, and even unfamiliarity. The camaraderie of other participants is a valuable part of the learning process. Nurture your new friendships that emerge from these workshops.
We all learn by different means. Some of us are best with auditory learning and the rest learn best by visual means. Fewer prefer both auditory and visual. Talking about what we are doing as we do it has proven to be an effective approach. Demonstration by example combines both the auditory and visual. This is a significant reason why I take photographs right next to each of the participants.

If you ever took a photograph and wondered why you were not satisfied with it, then this is the workshop for you. Hone your black & white photography skills through practice.
This workshop offers inspiring black and white possibilities with combining artistic expression and having fun exploring Healdsburg's scenic locations, cultural and historic downtown.
Black & white images are timeless and cherished as fine art. Movies created in black and white have a special quality to them. The focus is more on the characters rather than the surroundings. There are few distractions.
Black and white photographs provide a similar focus. It has an evocative power that color images do not have. Translate how you see the world of color to black and white. Anticipate how different colors convert to shades of gray in the photograph.
Recognize distinctive shapes and interesting textures that create appealing black and white images. Embrace space, tone, texture, scale, and shades.
